The Richmond Gulf is a huge inland lake separated from Hudson Bay by a strait appropriately named, "The Gullet" with ice flows flowing in and out at remarkable speed. The Gulf is 19 miles (30 km) wide and about 23 miles (37km) long. It is surrounded by high hills to 1,200 feet (365m) with many waterfalls. The Gulf is broken by high rocky islands. On the higher hills patches of snow are seen. The area is soon to become a National Provincial Park. The Richmond Gulf abounds in beluga whales, seals, eagles, cormorants, ptarmigan and even some black bears. We will paddle and hike up tributaries to see some spectacular waterfalls, visit an abandoned Hudson Bay Post, and view several late-Dorset subterranean dwellings that are over 1,000 years old.

Upper Missinaibi Whitewater (Canada)
Logo

Skill Level: Beg. - Inter.

Departs: Jun, Jul, Aug,

Cost: $1625 CDN

Length: 8 Days

Imagine..running 40 sets of rapids, portaging fewer than 10 times, and camping every night beside the roar of cascading falls and rapids. Few rivers can match the power, beauty and history of the Upper Missinaibi. Recenly featured in a CBC television documentary and an Outpost Magazine article, on the fur trader era, the Missinaibi River rushes 350 miles North from it's source at Missinaibi Lake to James Bay, over Precambrian granite, through string bogs and marshes, and all within a Provincial Park. Our guided trip catches the river near the headwaters, and for 100 miles of river, we drop 300'. Although the pace is relaxed enough to allow a full day of whitewater instruction, the trip is still demanding. At the end of a day of running rapids, nothing is more welcome than a hearty Missinaibi Headwaters feast prepared for you by your guide. Truly, the best way to experience one of the world's great rivers.
