e offer whitewater kayak instruction programs based out of our remote wilderness lodge on California's Salmon River. Whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned paddler looking to hone your skills, you will be treated to the finest instruction available, dine on exquisite cuisine, and stay in our spectacular lodge set amidst rolling lawns, towering forests, and the pristine Salmon River.
The difference between Otter Bar and other kayak schools is the individual attention given to each person.
Fourteen guests stay at the lodge for a week at a time while advancing their kayaking skills with instructors renowned for their teaching and expertise. The student/instructor ratio is the best in the business. So is the location. Surrounded by Northern California's Klamath National Forest, Otter Bar occupies a swooping bend in the Salmon River between the Trinity Alps and Marble Mountain Wilderness Areas. While extremely isolated, you are well taken care of on and off the river.
Our instructors are well known experts, leaders in the sport. Our equipment is the newest and best available. Our lodge features private beaches, crystal clear swimming holes, instructional ponds, deluxe accommodations, and a pristine free-flowing river. Be assured: your time here will be memorable.
Otter Bar operates from mid-April to late-September. With front door access to the Salmon River, we lead our courses on this spectacular river and its forks until levels drop below boatable flows--most often in late June (depending upon runoff). The dam-controlled Klamath River, a short drive from the lodge, offers summertime flows enabling us to paddle with plenty of water all the way through summer's dry and sunny days.
