White Rock Creek - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: August 2004
Nearest City: Dallas, TX
Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult
Submitted by: Keith Skelton

Description:

White Rock Creek is a tributary that feeds White Rock Lake in Dallas, which was formerly used as a reservoir for Dallas before other lakes in the area were created with Dams. This creek runs from Far North Plano down through White Rock Lake. We put in at Frankford Road and the tollroad, on a patch of land that my family has owned for generations. The paddle is easy, as long as it has rained within a week's time, otherwise you can expect some walking in areas where the water gets to be less than 4 inches deep. The most difficult part of the trip are the nine dams and too many to count logjams that exist throughout the creek. Our total distance was 18.4 miles, and it took us 7.5 hours to complete the trip, although we took numerous pictures and made out portages leisurely. The log jams require the most effort. The neatest thing about this creek is that you canoe through urban Dallas, yet no one will notice you except for the golfers along the five golf courses that you paddle through. If they bother you, break out your copy of Texas law and our rights as boats on navigable waterways.

Accommodations:

None

Fees:

None

Directions:

Go North on the tollroad in Dallas. Exit Briargrove, and take Hilton Head to the east until you reach Pauma Valley Circle. Our land is the only empty lot on the street and you can traverse it down to the creek. I suggest leaving a pull-out car at the North end of White Rock Lake.

Launches:

Take a shorter trip unless you just enjoy hitting it for over seven hours straight. There are put in spots under many of the major overpasses.

Resources:

I used a topographic photo map of Dallas with streets labeled to measure our progress.
