Schuylkill River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 2004
Nearest City: Hamburg, PA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: TOMCAT_TZ

Description:

Auburn to Port Clinton stretch of the Schuylkill River is about a 2 hr paddle at leisurely pace. After a foot of rain in July the water level was not a problem although in dry years dragging on the bottom is a problem at some points. There are some easy rapids (a couple of fun rapids where river narrows just before Port Clinton) and a run able dam under two railroad bridges that drops anywhere from 1 ft to maybe 3ft (scout before running is a good idea if not familiar). There is decent scenery with the mountain almost 1000ft above at some points. Not too much civilization immediately along river. Deer are common as well as lots of herons and foul.

Accommodations:

Park with pavilion in Port Clinton, possibly water fountain and port-a-potty.

Fees:

N/A

Directions:

Good starting point is under bridge on rt 895 just east of Auburn. End at landing in Port Clinton at the park.

Resources:

Schuylkill River Guide is useful and very detailed.
