Accommodating all kinds of sports, the reservoir sees a lot of use throughout the year. Power boating, fishing, windsurfing, water skiing, and camping are all common activities during the summer months. Canoe and kayaking are also popular.
Many areas of the reservoir are designated a "no wake area." The best of these locations, in my opinion, is on the west end which allows you to paddle into the canyon. Unfortunately, during the weekends the reservoir sees exceptional use. Thus, it is better to avoid it if you are a novice paddler or don't like the traffic.
Often, I get up just before sunrise so I can catch the mist floating up from the water and the morning birds fishing. The reservoir is completely placid at that time and as the sun climbs over the mountains, you can find wonderful serenity.
The paddling is always easy. Even the worst weather does not make the water too choppy. There fact that the reservoir is encircled by mountains keeps some of the stronger winds controlled. On that note, the weather in the valley is typically a few degrees cooler than down in Ogden. Thus, it is a pleasant reprieve from the heat of summer.
The Ogden Valley is also a wonderful place for a visit. Huntsville is a quaint little town with a fantastic bar called "The Shooting Star." Order a pitcher of beer and their famous burger. You won't be disappointed.
In addition, there is a genuine Trappist Monastery in which monks still worship daily and farm. They produce wonderful honey and have daily services. You can also see a lot of pastoral scenery and find many quiet spots for reflection along the way.
Pineview is a beautiful destination that is excellent for a quick paddle or a weekend excursion. Best used during the week or the twilight hours, it offers everything a flat water paddler could want!
