Juniata River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 2004
Nearest City: Breezewood, PA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: DONNA C BRUBAKER

Description:

Lots of ledge riffles offer novice whitewater for those getting their feet wet paddling (pardon the pun). Gentle current that would be good to tube, also. Canoes would have scraped but saw lots of them out there. River was about 1-4 ft deep on average. On the right side shortly after putting in we saw an old bridge base from the early 1800s. Can still see the wagon tracks leading to it to this day!

Fort existed on the west side but site unknown. Old inn that is still there had Abraham Lincoln stay there once. This is mostly pristine wilderness with some summer camps lining the side further downstream towards the take out point - Woy Bridge Campground.

Great river to take kids on!

Accommodations:

Lots of hotels and restaurants in Breezewood - take your pick!

Directions:

Breezewood exit off of PA Turnpike. Head west on RT30 for about 5 minutes. Juniata Crossings is first bridge.
