Allegheny River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Weekend Trip Report
Trip Dates: June 2004
Nearest City: Warren, PA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Jonathan

Departed the Kinzua Visitors' Center Friday afternoon (1pm) in the rain but water level was exceptionally low. Just before Warren the river narrows and bends to the right. Current picks up and gets a little rough but it was a fun ride. Passing the refinery is the only ugly spot on this section of the river. Paddled just past Dunn's Eddy and camped on Thompson's Island. Saturday morning was pretty as the fog lifted from the river. Stopped at Tidioute for a new hat (stiff headwinds and mine blew off) and of course we needed cold pop and ice cream. Leaving we found my hat floating down the river. Camped on a very large island upstream of East Hickory. Have found the right side of the islands best for camping, less noise from US Rt 62 which is rarely more than 100 yards away from the river. Sunday morning was about the same, sunny and windy. Reached Tionesta about 12:30pm (clean clothes and more pop and ice cream) With the exception of highway noise, this is a beautiful section of the river. No complex paddling and a great place to take beginners.

Several campgrounds in the Kinzua area; motels in Warren

Annual $10.00 access permit is you use one of the DCNR access areas.

Printed river section maps from DCNR website.
