Lynches River -- Lee State Natural Area - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: Oct. 2003
Nearest City: Bishopville, SC
Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult

Description:

Okay, this creek/river is listed as "easy" but unfortunately it was a creek clogged with a number of fallen trees. Yes a good crew can work their way down it in a few hours. We made the trip (with two novice paddlers) in about 5 hours (7 or so miles). The sights are pretty nice, the paddling is easy (except for fallen, and half sunken trees). We paddled the river when the USGS site showed around 5' I would NOT advise using the river at less than 5'. Additionally I understand convicts will be used to try and clean up the river (hot dog!) but until the trees get cleared only experienced paddlers should think about the river. The Lee State Park campground was fantastic and is a MUST visit. As a side we stopped at the park due to water levels. You should find a way to mark the stop as there is no landing at the park.

Accommodations:

Lee State Park has FULL facilities and a nice camp area, there is a boat ramp at the top but you may have to work to get out at the park.

Directions:

Interstate 20 exit 123 (Bishopville and the top of the creek is off HWY 15 (exit 116)). Maps from the forest service, and topozone.
