East Jordan River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: August 2003
Nearest City: East Jordan and Bellaire, MI
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: reeves

Description:

The East Jordan River was a great experience. Although we didn't see much wildlife we were able to spot an otter. The river is narrow and the current is about 2.7mph. The current definitely can make the trip a little tricky with it pulling you this way and that. Careful of the fallen trees beneath the surface of the water. They seem to pop up unexpectedly. This river is best done by kayak. Canoes seem to have a few difficulties maneuvering around because of the narrowness of the river and the fallen trees. I saw a handful of canoes along the river side looking for their paddles.

Accommodations:

I rented the kayaks from a little rental place. The place was equipped with friendly people. Both the employees and guests. The river has no campgrounds and only a few places to stop and walk around. The trip was only three hours long but I had stopped before reaching the Jordan Lake.

Directions:

The river runs along M66 and goes until M32.It is located on the western side of the state but east of Traverse City.
