College Creek - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 2003
Nearest City: Williamsburg, VA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: paddler87

We put in at the park on Henry Street and went to the left under Rt. 199. The creek meanders with lots of marsh grasses and birds to watch. The water is shallow and tidal, it is about a 5 mile paddle to the James River. There are nooks, crannies, and "paths" into the marsh grasses. We saw several osprey nests, tons of herons, egrets, etc. and bald eagles have been observed in the area. As you go along, there is a major intersection near the river. Bear to the left and you can go under the Colonial Parkway into the James River. We paddled back to the put in point since you are not supposed to launch boats on the parkway.

There are several areas that kayaks and canoes can be launched. There are no facilities except an observation deck.

No fees or permits are required.

From I-64 take the 199 west exit (like you are going to Busch Gardens). Stay on 199 until just after you cross the Colonial Parkway access. Turn right onto Henry Street, the park entrance is very close on the left.

Take your bird book, nothing else is needed.
