Algonquin Provincial Park - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Weekend Trip Report
Trip Dates: August 2000
Nearest City: Huntsville, ON
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: No.7

Heard that Lavielle was the prettiest in the park..decided to have a look. Started at Opeongo access point, paddled up to west arm, could have taken water taxi, as advised, but did not. Portaged to Proulx, camped first night at little crow. Next day went to crow and crow river, downstream to Lavielle, most portages not necessary. Camped second night on Lavielle. Proceeded south through Dickson, hardy bay, and did the three mile portage towards Opeongo east arm, and paddled to access point, finishing at dusk.

This was an excellent trip, we caught the speckled trout, saw 3 moose, and a family of otters. Not many people were encountered, even though it was middle of august. Very good workout, especially the long portage. Many would do this trip and take 4 or 5 days, but my time was limited, so we did it back on the 3rd day. Next time if I have extra, I'll take an additional day.

We, consisted of my 15 year old son Dan, and myself, a slightly tired 46 year old Rob.

Many do the trip backwards, thus getting frustrated, on the crow river. Go with the flow.....

Many outfitters along the way, from Huntsville.

Interior Camping permitt required, $9.00 per night per person at the time.

North 3 hours from Toronto, up the 400, veer east up no.11 highway to Huntsville, then into the park via highway 60.
