Old Tombigbee River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Day Trip Report

O.K. to start this out, this is about a 10 to 12 hour trip its about 36 miles paddling. Itís mostly quiet paddling with a small current for about 10 miles. There are many trees down in the water so a few portages are A MUST. There are many drifts that are nearly impassable by canoe but a small kayak [I have a Swifty] can manage o.k. I have taken my 16' canoe on the trip 2 times this year, the water is usually muddy from the strong current & stumps under the waterline make it kinda dangerous. Iíve went bottom up & a downed tree under the water skinned my stomach & chest. Several places you must lie flat back on a kayak or canoe to go under trees & thorns. One place the water is about 12 -15 feet but it has giant trees laying across the river & the water rushes across the top like a rapid about a foot deep for maybe 60 yards. A helmet & pfd should be worn at this stage of the trip. Iím 1 for 3 trying to cross, two people have drowned this summer alone on this river but not on my trip. O.K. the good part, itís a very desolate area mostly wildlife management area. There are nice sand bars to stop for lunch and the landscape is great. If I were a doctor Iíd prescribe this trip to everyone 12 & over.
