Description:

Length: about 10 miles
Duration: 4 hours

The put-in for this trip is a good one as there is a boat ramp on the south side of the road. The paddle is an easy one following Cavassos Creek into St. Charles Bay. The creek is backed up so there isn't a flow-just lots of grass, birds, fish and beautiful sky.

Upon entering the Bay, I paddled along the shore exploring the little inlets as I made my way down to Goose Island where I was camping. The trip is peaceful and the scenery and solitude can hardly be beat. There were a few fishing boats across the Bay, but nobody where I paddled. As I drew closer to the state park, houses began to appear as well as fishing piers. There are a lot of them jutting out but most are run down and don't seem to be used any more as some are in bad shape. There are a series of boxes made of wood and chicken wire about 25 yards offshore. I found out later they are nesting boxes for birds. There is an old and famous hunting club there that still uses them to attract targets. I guess birders could use them also.

The take-out is at the boat ramp at the state park. I arrived about the time several fishing boats did and got to watch the excitement amongst the birds as they got the fish parts thrown from the cleaning tables. That's a sight worth seeing!
