Tioughnioga River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Day Trip Report
We arrived at the drop point which was the Yaman Park just off Rt 81. The Tioughnioga River is the one you see to the west of Route 81 as you drive south of Cortland. We unloaded the kayaks and did the shuttle of cars to Marathon. We left them at the American Legon parking lot. When the drivers returned we geared up for the days paddle. There were some new paddlers, a head count of 34 I think, and some seasoned paddlers with new boats but the sun had come out finally and it promised to be a great trip.
There is a gentle current, that will vary with the amount of water, making the trip seem shorter than 13 or so miles. Also, depending upon the amount of water, there was some obstructions along the shore. At the moment, the water was higher than average. There were places that we scrapped bottom and places where the water was moving swiftly enough to give you a thrill. We stopped for a break along the way to eat a bit of lunch and take a break from sitting. Because of some obstruction from the spring run off and the heavy rains there were a couple of turn overs. Everyone was fine and help in retreaving the boats and paddles was all that was necessary. Everyone was happy when we arrived at the take out point and were talking about the next paddle. Isn't that the reason that we do it? The fun, the exercise, the time outdoors, and the planning of the next trip!
This is a fun trip and I would do this again. There is also more to paddle downstream that we will be doing sometime soon. Some land on the way is posted so be aware of that. Some land is not posted and stopping is allowed.
We were there before they opened for the season but they have restrooms and a pond and play park as well as grills and picnic tables.
Rt 81 to Cortland exit. Yaman Park is 1500 ft to the north on Rt 13.
