Nissitissit River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: May 2003
Nearest City: Brookline, NH
Difficulty: Easy

My wife & I enjoyed a beautiful day lazily gliding along this river. It's a clean trout brook, and at the beginning it meanders through a marshy area. Lots of beaver sign including a couple of lodges and several dams that we had to go over. However this was easy since there is good water level this time of year. We saw a great variety of birds including two Great Blue Heron; several turtles; and one muskrat (my opinion) or beaver (my wife's opinion). Anyway, we picked a great weather day for a comfortable trip.

As far as obstructions go: we had to portage once, about 30 yards, around several trees that blocked the passage. And one other time it was difficult to get under one tree. Keep in mind that this river is best run in spring when there is enough water; otherwise the number of obstacles would increase.

A large portion of the second half of the trip is conservation land. It is also a "Catch and Release, Fly Fishing Only" section. Also note: no camping anywhere; no rest room facilities anywhere.

We put in from Bohanon Rd in Brookline NH. Take rte 130 east from Brookline Center; Bohanon is on the right; travel short distance to the bridge. There is parking for at least half a dozen cars.

We took out at the dam in Pepperell Center. However, since we crossed private land I recommend instead to take out at the Prescott St bridge, also in Pepperell. This is off Brookline road from Pepperell Ctr.
