Saugatuck River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Submitted by: ottffssent
Saugatuck River, runs from the Long Island Sound up into the town of Westport and beyond, until it trickles out.
The river is tidal, and not very comfortable at low tide. However, high tide makes a very nice hour or two paddling. Lots of birds and one can actually get out of the kayak in midtown (lock your boat) for a coffee at nearby Starbucks. At the Long Island Sound end, Westport back is very nice, in the summer featuring ice cream, swimming and other attractions.
Not much in the way of accommodations, but a good deli, Peters Market, at the iron bridge. Town has tons of good restaurants.
The public boat ramp is off South Compo Road. Reached from exit 17 on I-95, straight off ramp, left on Riverside Drive, right on Greensfarms Road and right onto South Compo Road. Launch is on the right just under I-95.
No restrictions and large parking area. Asphalt ramp makes for fairly easy launching.
None at this time, although launching from the beach requires permit.
