Topanga State Beach - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Day Trip Report
Santa Monica, CA
Tapanga State Beach is located off the PCH (Hwy 1). This is a somewhat secluded beach setting and offers a bit of a point break for some great kayak surfing. There were no restrictions for kayaks, unlike Malibu and several other beaches. The sets were rolling in at about three - four feet and the point offered smaller rollers further up the beach. I had some great long rides that provided opportunities to play on the face, cutting back and over the curl. The boarders were friendly and did not seem to mind a yaker amongst them. This is one of few places in the area with a point break--beach breaks are plenty but &^%&% for surfing. My poor old Perception Dancer knows her time has come to be replaced with a more aggressive surfer--maybe a Wold or Necky Rip. Paddle On...and upright!
A general store is across the street for munchies. A short decent down easy stairs to the beach. The beach has real bathrooms and freshwater shower rinse area. Lifeguard building and police sub-station. There is a sandy beach for bathers. The main surfing area has round smooth rocks at the waterline but further off the main breakers is great kayak surfing and sandy beach landings. Parking is very limited so weekenders be prepared to drop your boat then park a short distance away.
Parking fees are $2.00 on weekdays and around $6.00 on weekends.
From the 405 S, exit Sunset Blvd. and travel west to PHC (Hwy 1), turn N on PCH approximately two miles. Topanga State Beach is on the west side of the road. Fee Parking.
