Description:

On the way home as I was going across the Lavaca Bay Bridge, I noticed how peaceful the water was and how pretty the old hiway’s piling were stretched out into the bay. I decided one last paddle would be nice, so I turned around, launched from a park just south of the old hiway bridge and paddled out the length of the bridge pilings-about 1/2 mile. At the end there was a small island where I sat for a long time debating again if I should call in sick and paddle some more in the beautiful weather. I thought about following the new hiway bridge to the other side, but it was too far and I had a long way to go to get home. So, I headed back to shore and loaded Ole Yeller (my Carolina) up once more.

This is a beautiful area to paddle with the industrial areas on the eastern shore, however, I'd be careful about paddling over there due to safety concerns. The bay is very large and wind would definitely be a factor to watch along with boat traffic. There wasn't any traffic when I was there because the area was shut down due to the Army shipping out equipment.

Directions:

The launch is a park south of the TX 35 bridge over Lavaca Bay on the west end of the bay. It can be easily reached by taking Hiway 87 south out of Victoria. The launch is a nice beach with plenty of parking.
