Bluegrass FWA - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: Oct. 2002
Nearest City: Evansville, IN
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: gator1

Description:

This was the second fishing trip to Bluegrass FWA in two weeks. I took my 4-year-old son into the largest of several lakes (Blue Grass Pit) in an Old Town Osprey canoe. We spent a total of 4 hours on Blue Grass Pit. All of the lakes and ponds in this newly established FWA are former mining pits and are excellent fishing destinations. The wildlife is interesting in that the area surrounding the lakes is mostly prairie with a few small thickets of young trees. On this trip, we saw an Osprey, a Heron and several red tailed hawks. The water is restricted to electric motors only and therefore is blessedly free of PWC and other noise. The best fishing (and wildlife watching) is in the smaller ponds that twist and wind and are impassible in places to anything larger than a canoe. On one small pond (Buck pit) there is an active beaver dam. I couldn't find the lodge, but will go back and look for it later. The FWA is closed to fishing during the regular waterfowl season.

Accommodations:

There are new concrete boat launches on most of the lakes and ponds. There are also grassy areas of the banks nearby each of the ramps that make better canoe launch points. There is plenty of parking by the ramps.

Directions:

From I-164 about halfway between Evansville and I-64, turn east onto Boonville-New Harmony Road. The FWA begins just past the highway. There is a check in station on the right about 1/2 mile from the highway. Maps of the entire FWA are available there.

Resources:

The free map provided at the check in station was very basic, but adequate for a day trip.
