Delaware River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: June 2002
Nearest City: Blairstown, NJ
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Jeff

Description:

The Delaware River, near the GAP, is magnificent. I Enter at Poxono boat launch (usually no cars there at 8am) and try to make this trip at least once per month. The river actually forms an island here and the mainland side has no current. The far side of the island has the current and is too difficult to paddle upstream for very long. Water visibility is 2ft.(when muddy) to 10ft(bottom) and a multitude of fishes will be seen(i.e. shad, catfish, muskie, large and small mouth bass). Bald eagles nest here as well as King Fishers, hawks, heron, etc. Beaver and bear too. The scenic drive once off Rt. 80 will make your day. I usually spend 2/3 hours at a leisurely pace.

Accommodations:

Campgrounds in Worthington by reservation on weekend. Great place. Bring in everything . No facilities along this road except the state park. Pit toilets.

Fees:

No fees or permits. Must wear life vest and rangers periodically visit the area.

Directions:

Interstate 80 west to last exit in NJ(Old Mine Road) Just east of the bridge over the Delaware River. Exit and take the Old Mine Rd. north approx. 8miles? River will be on your left. Pass the Worthington state forest campground on left and another few miles look for Poxono boat launch sign on left.
