Buffalo National River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Ponca, AR
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: hike

Ok this river is nearly beyond words to describe it has fun white water in it upper stretches and at higher water levels in has wrecked more than one rental canoe. But white water is not the only draw it is a fantastic multi-day trip with towering bluffs, an elk herd, beautiful waterfalls and comfortable gravel bars to camp on. In its lower stretches it flows through the Lower Buffalo Wilderness, scenic and peaceful in the extreme and a bonus is great fishing for smallmouth bass. Best yet, it's all protected by the National Park Service, as it is our first national river.

Primitive camping on the river and some developed N.P.S. campgrounds, outfitters abound.

From Springdale Ark. Take route 412 to route 21 to get to the upper stretches in Ponca, or proceed on 412 to Harrison for access to the middle and lower river.

In times of high river levels you can put in at Baxley Bridge for a great class 2 possibly 3 run to Ponca with great play spots but Ponca to the campground at Kyles Landing is the classic day trip, numerous other possibilities exist.
