Zion National Park - Virgin River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Difficulty: Moderate

Description:

Paddling the Virgin River is dependent on snowmelt. Usually between March and May. CFS should be between 250 and 300 CFS, but it is possible at 150-200 CFS. CFS can be obtained at the Zion National Park visitor center. The river offers some very fun class II-III.

The Virgin River is an amazing way to see Zion Canyon. You will be surrounded by sandstone cliffs thousands of feet high.

Be sure to check with the local knowledge since weather conditions can suddenly change the conditions of this river.

Accommodations:

Plenty of BLM land surrounding the area offers plenty of free squatting. There are campgrounds located in Springdale and Zion National Park.

Fees:

A permit is required within the boundaries of Zion National Park. It was free last time I checked, but subject to change. An entrance fee is charged at the entrance to Zion.

Directions:

From St. George Utah drive North on I15. Take the highway 9 exit towards Zion National Park. Follow highway 9 East to Springdale and Zion National Park.

Launches:

Temple of Sinawava to Court of the Patriarchs(easy class II-III). Located within Zion National Park. See the backcountry desk at the visitor center for maps and info. Special arrangements have to be made for put-ins at the Temple of Sinawava because of the canyon closure to private vehicles. Arrangements can be made at the visitor center backcountry desk. About a one hour run.

Springdale to Mosquito cove. Talk to the folks at the "Mean Bean" coffee shop located in Springdale for directions, and an espresso. About a 1 1/2 hour run.
