The wonderful folks at Sweetwater Kayaks invited us down to Florida to see what Florida paddling is all about. Wow! Such a diversity of paddling destinations that you could paddle a new location every day and see something different every time. Give it a try, you won't find friendlier people than the people at Sweetwater Kayaks to show you the ropes.
We left cool Michigan in search of warmer weather and some good paddling. We found both and still aren't sure why we came back home!
In case you don't know us, we're Brian and Brent, founders of Paddling.net. This trip was an opportunity to meet new people and explore new territories. We cherish both opportunities and encourage you to always do the same.
We arrived on Friday night and settled into our campsite at Ft. Desoto Campground, near Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL. Saturday morning we paddled out into the Gulf to Egmont Key and on to Anna Maria Island where we stopped for lunch before returning. Sunday we left town and headed about 45 minutes north of Tampa to the Weeki Wachee River. The Weeki Wachee is a spring fed river filled with birds, fish, and mammals. The most unique feature of this river is that it is home to Manatee which are easily observed from a canoe or kayak.
