Ocmulgee River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: August 27, 2012
Nearest City: Douglas, GA
Difficulty: Easy

Description:

Two 12 foot kayaks made the trip, my father and I. Our plan had been to put in at flat tub landing on river mile 35. Due to low water levels the river was not accessible here without dragging the kayaks over a 100 yards through knee high grass.

We decided to go seven miles up river to river mile 42.2 to barr's bluff landing. Our initial plan was to paddle to burkett's ferry landing, river mile 19.6, but, after snapping a paddle blade pushing off a sandbar(I am ashamed to say that was me!) and hurricane USAF deciding to rain on us, we had someone pick us up at rocky hammock landing. I am not sure the exact river mile as it is not listed on the Georgia dnr website but I would guess around river mile 30, giving us a total paddle distance of approximately 12 miles.

We put in at 10 am and took out at 230pm. We had a strong head wind almost every turn, but still averaged 3 mph floating and fishing. Due to low water conditions part of the river is not navigable by motor boats, but was easily accessible for kayaks. Only twice did we run into rough currents that required our full attention and some moderate paddling.

We saw one otter and one gator and many turtles and birds. We saw only one cabin and no people for the entirety of our trip. it was a great paddle and our first on this river, although we have several more planned. Lost of sandbars are present for stops, we chose to eat on the water.
