Springs, Long Island - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
East Hampton, NY
Springs New York is an old fishing community on the Gardiners Bay side of the south fork. It has many places to paddle, and for all skill levels. The Harbors are all different. Three Mile Harbor is a great day trip, but has boat traffic and is built up along the shore. Hog Creek is small but has lots of birds and no boat traffic in the creek. Parking could be a problem. Accabonac harbor is a joy to paddle. It is a great morning or evening paddle with many birds and other wildlife. If the harbors aren't enough, Gardiners Bay will keep you busy for a while. It is surrounded by islands and to the east is the Atlantic Ocean. The seas can be very rough if the wind is up out of the north or southeast. This is a great place for more experienced paddlers because of the tides rips and the distances to cross. If you're bold you can row to Connecticut 13 miles or Block Island 25 miles. Springs has a lot to offer a sea kayaker. Pick up a good chart of the area before you start out.
Town fees will be required at some places. If you go during the week you shouldn't have any problems.
Take 495 east to Montauk Hwy. east. When you get to East Hampton go left at the windmill and follow the signs to springs fireplace road. If you take this road to the end you will end up at a beach on Gardiners bay.
