Cypress Creek - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: Mar. 2002
Nearest City: Florence, AL
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Kelly Holdridge

Description:

This report refers to the lower stretch.

With the weather turning warmer recently (and abruptly), we decided to hit lower Cypress Creek, a good three to four hour coast/paddle (including the "shuttle", if you're fast enough). We dropped in at Cox Creek Parkway where it crosses Cypress Creek and picked up at Wildwood Park (which has dramatically changed this year with the new funding and new underwater gas line where Wildwood Bridge crosses lower Cypress Creek). The water was down and various areas needed "scooting" because of the low water level. Didn't have to carry canoe. A great part about lower Cypress: the waterfall/dam about 1/4 mile down the creek, which is just fun to "jump." Otherwise, great run and good to be back on the water. Two canoes, four people. P.S., not UPPER Cypress Creek (dropoff point of which is near Forks of Cypress), which has it's own entry. If you pass the golf course or "Lassie" (that dang hyper dog), you're on LOWER Cypress.

Accommodations:

No accommodations or facilities until Wildwood Park. Take A.P.P.

Directions:

Take Cox Creek to the bridge that crosses Cypress Creek and drive down deep-rutted "access road" to river (not necessary if carrying canoe down this road). Cypress Creek is near Highway 20, and also where Wood Avenue crosses Cox Creek.
