Bear Island (Hammocks Beach SP) - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Extended Trip Report
Trip Dates: May 1-4, 2014
Nearest City: Swansboro, NC
Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult
Submitted by: Starvin Marvin

Description:

Twenty-three of us paddled from the State Park for 2.5 miles to Bear Island along the ocean. We spent three nights camping taking all necessary gear and food.

The place is beautiful, full of waterfowl and lots of places to explore. There are three campsites you can paddle into along the marsh with excellent views. Six other sites are a half mile further paddle through a tidal lagoon but you can pull your kayak if necessary. Four other sites are a mile further paddle to the Ferry Dock and then a mile walk to the sites.

Without a breeze the gnats can be an issue in the marsh campsites. On the ocean dunes campsites, strong winds can be an issue. The ocean sites are 100 yards apart and the showers are a half mile walk from the furthest site.

Carrying gear is a problem. Wear a backpack, use kayak wheels and be prepared to walk. Be aware of winds and tides table. We will opt for the group campsite next visit so visiting will not be such a challenge.

Outfitting:

12-14 touring & recreational kayaks

Fees:

Small camp fee and sign-in for your permit
