East Fork, White River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: August 30, 2013
Nearest City: Columbus, IN
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: Jeff Ewick

Description:

My wife and I took this section of the East Fork of White river upon the advice of a friend. The weather has been very dry and the river levels were quite low so we encountered a couple of shallows where we had to get out and pull through and a few more that were barely passable. If there was even a little more water, it would have been fine.

This section is about 12 miles between two DNR public access sites. This was a Friday so we didn't see any other people although on weekends I have noticed cars parked at both public sites.

We saw an eagle a couple times as it flew ahead of us as well as many herons and other river birds. Lots of carp in the shallows and a few fish jumping. One jumped and hit my paddle. Surprise! It was pleasant trip, but I would suggest earlier in the summer when there is more water.
Enjoy!

Accommodations:

Both of these DNR public access sites have gravel parking areas and concrete boat ramps. Easy to find and easy access. Most use is on the weekends by fishermen.

Fees:

No fees, no costs.

Directions:

We started at the DNR public access ramp just downstream of the dam in Columbus. Take SR 46 into Columbus and turn off just east/north of the river.

We took out at the DNR Azalia public access site off of Co Rd 800.

Both sites are less than a mile off of SR 11 which runs from Columbus to Seymour parallel to White River and US 65. If coming from I-65 take the US 46 exit east. Cross the red suspension bridge and take the very first right then turn towards the river down to the public access site.

Launches:
