Myakka River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: Mar. 2002
Nearest City: Sarasota, FL
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: garym053

Description:

We put in on the Myakka River in the Myakka State Park, and paddled downstream for about an hour. There were many alligators, turtles, and birds around the edges of the river. Being from New England, the alligators were a little disconcerting at first, however once you passed a few and realized that they were going into the water to hide, not to get you, it became more enjoyable. This is a beautiful part of Florida that, I bet, not many tourists take the time to see! We booked this tour through Kayak Treks in Sarasota, FL. 800-656-3891.

Fees:

Entrance fee at park, approximately $4.00 per person

Directions:

Take SR-72 out of Sarasota, approximately 10 miles East to the entrance of Myakka State Forest. Pay fee and follow road to pull off by river.

Contact:

Camping at Myakka State Park. Numerous motels, hotels, at Sarasota, FL
