Wambaw Creek (Francis Marion National Forest) - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 9, 2013
Nearest City: McClellanville, SC
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: skydancer

Description:

Put in with a guide and group from Charleston for a half day trip. We had our own boats so we tagged along. Fine for novices. We saw a couple of small gators who took off as we approached. Guide pointed out 1,000 year old cypress trees.

We did this paddle on a cool day (relatively) in July; probably would have seen more and been more pleasant at other times of the year, but it wasn't too bad this day. We did an "up and back" so not sure if you wanted to go anywhere that would be possible or not.

A pleasant trip with a good guide. Use the toilets at the stores located at the 17-45 intersection and you'll be happier. We encountered fire ants and that was unpleasant! The place looks like snake heaven, but we didn't see any all day.

Accommodations:

A dirt road with a large gravel area to turn around on so don't worry if you have a trailer. The put in is right at the end of the road, a wide shallow soft sand slope into the creek. There is a forest service sign there; no bathrooms, no running water, no latrines.

Fees:

No

Directions:

Cross roads of US 17 and SC 45. Head west on SC 45. Look for the Forestry Service sign to Mill Branch, then the small Forestry Service to Still Landing. Go down the dirt road to Still Landing, turn left at the first dirt road, boat ramp is well marked.
