Moose Pond (Adirondack) - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: June 8, 2013
Nearest City: Saranac, NY
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: RonE58

After renting two tandem kayaks at High Peaks Cycle on main Street in Lake Placid we headed out to Moose Pond about a half hour away. The morning clouds and damp weather gave way to a party sunny afternoon. A light breeze also kept the bugs at a minimum.

Moose Pond is in the Mckenzie Wilderness area. The pond is a little over a mile long and has spectacular views of Moose and McKenzie peaks, Whiteface is in the distance.

It was Sunday afternoon and there were a half dozen cars in the lot. There were a few kayaks, canoes and row boats about. We took our time and paddled the perimeter of the lake and marveled at the beauty and quiet.

Two common loons called from opposite sides of the lake and a broad-winged hawk flew over. There are camp sites scattered about among a few bluffs. I highly recommend this spot, especially if you want to get away from noisy power boats.

There was a bathroom and parking for 20 or so cars

no fees

After leaving Lake Placid we headed east on 86; in Saranac we took Route 3 north for 10 mins until we came into Bloomingdale; here we took a right on Main St, and a quick right on River Rd. After two miles or so we made a right on Moose Pond Rd, to the parking area and steep ramp.
