Chester State Park Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Chester, SC
Difficulty: Easy

Description:

Chester State Park is about a mile south of the town of Chester, SC. It's halfway between Columbia, SC & Charlotte, NC.

The Park Ranger was great about telling us how to get about the lake, and things to look for. We saw several blue herons, and think we saw a glimpse of a bald eagle. The Ranger said there had been a pair hanging around every spring for the past 3 years.

The lake is 160 acres and wraps around the parks' campground, picnic shelters, & playgrounds. The Park Ranger said they are building a huge disc golf course in the park soon too. We're coming back to go camping and make a whole weekend trip soon.

Accommodations:

160 acre lake, jon-boat rentals, boat ramp, 3 picnic shelters, 3 public bathrooms, playgrounds, campgrounds

Fees:

$2 per adult admission to the park

Directions:

Take Exit 65 off I77 towards the town of Chester on hwy 9 about 9 miles. Once you get to town, turn left on the by-pass and go another 5 or so miles. Turn left on hwy 72, and the park is about a mile down on your left. There are signs everywhere you need to turn.
