This was the first time we ventured this river when there was still ice floating and snow along the edges, but the water this time of year is generally higher and that makes this a fun trip. I usually check
If the river is above 8 feet, you should be able to pass this trip with a canoe without portaging. Today, it was at 9.5; a week ago it was almost 13! We rented 3mil wet suits from the local dive outfitters for $10 - and wore under-armor as well as fleece over the suit. If you go out in late March or early April, I suggest at least this or a dry suit.
There are several new tree falls, but none were impassible today, and we never had to pull out our saw. Lots of water fowl, hawks, owls, king fishers and other wildlife can be seen along the way. Current was probably 3-4 miles per hour. We were glad we went.
