Flint River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Weekend Trip Report
Trip Dates: Dec. 2001
Nearest City: Woodberry, GA
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: hollandbriscoe

Description:

This is a 19-mile trip with some amazing scenery. Put in at Highway 18 and take out at Highway 36. At the take out there is an outfitter so you have to pay to park but it is only five dollars. The guide book suggest that the river can be run at a minimum of 300 cubes we paddled at 500 cubes and were frequently dragging rocks. This trip should be run at least 800 cubes and a thousand would be ideal. At this water level almost the entire river would be a series of class I rapids with five or six quality class II rapids thrown into the mix. The best whitewater on this section is from Spewell Bluff state park to highway 36.IN many places the scenery is spectacular, with towering bluffs right on the river. This river has the best of both worlds on it. Their are literally areas with live oaks and spanish moss on one side of the river and mountain laurels on the other. Unfortunately there are also some sections that are grossly over developed. If you just want an easy day trip put in at Spewell bluff State park. This is a day use only park so there is no overnight parking.

Accommodations:

No camping facilities. Flint river outdoor center at takeout.

Directions:

From Atlanta take 75 south to Old Dixie Parkway (hwy 19/41) take this south trough Griffin after Griffin 19 and 41 separate take 19 south to Hwy 18 west put in is on the left. To get to the take out take hwy 74 (it and 18 merge just before the river) to Thomaston. In Thomaston pick up hwy 36 west and follow it to the river take out is on the left
