Cypress Creek / Windsor Castle Park - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 15, 2012
Nearest City: Smithfield, VA
Difficulty: Easy

Smithfield, VA has several great opportunities for kayaking. The newly dedicated Windsor Castle Park has a floating kayak launch putting you into Cypress Creek. From Cypress Creek you can paddle north for half a mile to the confluence of the Pagan River. Both bodies have beautiful homes and views of nature to look at. You can also fish there.

Continuing northward the Pagan empties into the James River. Just prior to entering the James, you can make a left into Jones Creek. Along the way there are several places to stop and eat (Smithfield Station and Capt Chuckamuck's).

Great Launch (no getting wet), plenty of restaurants in the local area including on the water.

No fees or permits required

From Newport News, VA take 258 South/Hwy 17 (Mercury Blvd) into Isle of Wight County, VA. Take a right onto Hwy 32 (Brewers Neck Rd) until reaching the "T" intersection. Take another right onto Benn's Church Rd. Continue following the signs to the Smithfield Historic District. Once in the historical district, find Windsor Castle Park on Cedar St. The park straddles Cedar St and the launch is on the east side.
