Pettigrew Lake / Meadowood Park - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Upper Falls, WV
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: CoalRiver

Meadowood Park features Pettigrew Lake, which is a small, calm lake that's perfect for beginners who want to learn how to kayak.

Access is easy, as is put-in and take-out. The park is conveniently located in the Charleston Metropolitan Area.

Parking and restrooms are available.
There's a pretty cool dock that extends into the lake and provides a great place for an instructor to stand. Meadowood also features soccer fields, volleyball, picnic shelters, children's play structures, fishing and boating on Coal River.

The park is home to the Upper Falls Landing on the Walhonde Water Trail, a natural landing on Coal River that supports watercraft portage around Upper Falls Dam and Upper Falls Lock. Upper Falls Point provides a spectacular view of the Upper Falls.

The Upper Falls Walking Trail is here, one of a series of autonomous trails that comprise the Walhonde Walking Trail system.

Admission is free.

From I-64 westbound, take exit 55 and proceed along Kanawha Turnpike, Lincoln Drive and Smith Creek Road; turn right between Upper Falls Crossing and Upper Falls Bridge. From I-64 eastbound, take exit 44, Winfield Road south, West Main Street east and Coal River Road south; turn left at Upper Falls Intersection onto Upper Falls Bridge, then left at the end of the bridge.

Kanawha County Parks and Recreation Commission can be reached at 304-341-8000
