Wood River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: June 17, 2012
Nearest City: Hope Valley, RI
Difficulty: Moderate

Description:

The hurricane of 2011 (Irene) put a lot of trees down into the river although most of them have been cut to go by, they have not been removed so in a few places you are threading a needle which is not too bad but there are a lot of rocks that must also be navigated around. Most of the trees are at near the Put-in for the river near but it lasts until you get to the Wood River pond at the end.

The river is fun to do and can easily be done with kids in the canoe, there is just a lot of turning and steering to do on this river now, so make sure the person in the back knows how to steer. It is very hard to take pictures on the river for the most part as you are steering way too much to pick up a camera but the Frying pan Pond you can as well as the Wood River Pond. Plenty of Stops along the river to stop and have a picnic and take pictures there, Just remember to pick up your trash as most of it is private land.

There is on Portage you need to do at the end of the Frying Pan Pond easy out and carry across Arcadia Road (when you cross the street stay to the right a short distance and there is a shorter carry in to the next put in)

Fees:

No fees

Directions:

Put in at Ten Rod Road (Rt165)
Portage at Arcadia Road Dam
Take Out at Noose Neck Road in Hope Valley behind the Hope Valley Inn
