Staunton (Roanoke) River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Weekend Trip Report
June 15-16, 2012
South Boston, VA
Fathers Day and Friends Weekend trip. We set out for an overnight trip on the Staunton River. We launched at Scuffletown road on the River and began our 21 mile journey. We had a good push of water from recent rains and there was not much need in paddling with a speed of approx 2.5 mph.
There are very few places to stop for breaks and picnics. Down stream at hwy 92 there is a nice sand bar for lunch. The last 5 miles of the journey the water slowed down as the river entered the lake, and paddling was necessary. It took 8.5 hours for the journey with an hour of stops along the way.
We camped overnight at Staunton River State Park Campground. We re-entered the lake the next day and went one mile to get to the home side of the lake for an easy drive home.
Overnight at Staunton River State Park campground.
Park service shuttled canoes to and from campground, very professional staff!!!!
