Wabash River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Weekend Trip Report
Trip Dates: May 27-29, 2012
Nearest City: Covington, IN
Difficulty: Easy

Description:

We put in at the boat ramp in Covington, IN. You can park for a number of days there with no problem. We paddled down the river three days; each day was about 20 miles. There are islands along the river and other banks that are great for camping. Indiana DNR told me that the land under the water is owned by the adjacent land to the river so the islands and shore are private property - just look for no trespassing signs and then we camped with no problems.

The river was about 25% below median flow and the wind was directly out of the south so we had to paddle the better part of 10 hours each day to make the 20 miles. Day three had less wind and made for an easier day.

We ended in Terre Haute, IN at the park south of the county seat building. In the future we will not make this a three day trip unless the water is higher to move faster. We didn't need to drag the canoe or kayaks at all, but our fishing time was limited due to the need to make the 20 miles each day.

The silver carp may startle you from time to time as they like to jump over your boat. We saw many Bald Eagles!

Accommodations:

Camping on river

Outfitting:

Canoe and kayaks

Fees:

fishing permits

Directions:

We drove to Terre Haute and parked a car at Fairview Park, then took the van with gear up to Covington on Indiana state road 63 about 55 minutes, put in and left the van at the public access point.

Once we finished our trip we drove the car to retrieve the van and then back to Terre Haute to pick up the gear and head home.
