I took my wife and sons (10 & 14) for our 1st River trip this weekend. We are new to kayaking as of 2012. We paddled the 8 Mile section of Terrapin Creek upriver from "Terrapin Outdoor Center" near Piedmont AL. We used them for shuttling services to prevent us from having to drive two vehicles. It was reasonable at $30 for the four of us (we have our own kayaks). It was $15 for the 1st kayak and $5 each for the rest.
We had a blast. Wonderful scenery, very clear water, along with a few fun small rapids and "funnels". The water was down a bit due to dry conditions. The flow was a little slow in the slack water and we did drag bottom in some of the rock filled sections, but it was still fun to us. We had to get out and drag the kayaks twice for about 20 feet across shallow water, that was it. The rest of the float was clear sailing. We seen several water snakes, Bass, and a beaver taking a break on a fallen tree. Took a lunch break on an "Island" of sort. There are plenty of places to take a break when needed.
The owners of the shop and the employees were very informative and respectful. I asked a lot of questions and they never got tired. They warned us of any dangers, explained the length of the trip, and what to look for when we were near the take-out.
I would love to go back after a good rain and when the water is up a few inches. I'd bet the smaller rapids and faster flow would be even more fun!
Kayak/Canoe shop with most anything you could ask for. Kayak/Canoe Rentals and Shuttle services.
Shuttle fees if you have your own kayak, included if you rent. It's easier to visit the website for more info. on rates, etc.
Go to http://www.canoeshop.net/ for directions, then go to Google maps to get a better idea of the location, and then plan your route. Using a GPS is iffy at best depending on the model you have an its updates. It may or may not take you through the easiest/fastest route.
