Wolf River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: September 24, 2011
Nearest City: Pass Christian, MS
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: Doug

Description:

Many of the waters in southern Louisiana have no shoal runs; therefore, coming across those on the Wolf make a difference in navigation skills. I used my own sit-on-top kayak and had Wolf River Canoes provide a shuttle to the launch. I did the 4.5 trip.

I found the water shallow and got stuck once early (my mistake for misreading the flow). Also, early in the trip, a downed tree stretched across all but a few feet. I didn't see that it stretched across, hit it and fell out. The river current ran well, and I didn't even paddle at times.

I launched at 11:30 a.m. and was done by 2 p.m. (including a 30-minute stop to warn the group behind me of the downed tree). It's a quiet area and a somewhat moderate to easy run. Nice scenery. Lots of beaches to stop on.

Outfitting:

Wolf River Canoes provides canoes, kayaks and/or shuttle for personal boats. This trip is done for groups mainly

Fees:

Wolf River Canoes Shuttle runs: $25.
Canoe rentals are $40 plus tax. Seat backs are additional fee.

Directions:

From New Orleans, take I-10 east to exit 28 in Mississippi. Turn north and go to first stop sign (about 1.5 miles) and turn left. Take that road to the only stop sign (about 5.5 miles) and turn left. A little more than .5 miles cross bridge to parking area on left side of the road.
