Upper Highland Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Goshen, MA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Robert Harris
Description:
Upper Highland Lake is a smallish lake with several nice bays. Once around the circumference is probably about two miles.
This is part of a state forest and there is no development on the lake other than a couple sandy beaches attached to campgrounds. On my last visit there I watched an osprey perching in a tall pine, circling, and finally catching a fish. Geese, ducks, kingfishers, and great blue heron are also very common. The area also has some nice hiking trails that can be explored by pulling at on the shore.
Accommodations:
Goshen is very small with just a few stores. The Wiliamsburg Store maybe 5 miles east on Route 9 is a classic. In season, there are facilities and a small snack bar in the park.
Fees:
Parking fee in season, free otherwise.
Directions:
Take Route 112 north from Route 9 in Goshen — about 10 miles from the center of Northampton.
