The Dodge USGS station reported 400 cfs on 9/24/11 which proved to be sufficient. Only bottomed once on a sandbar, and that was my own inattentiveness.
This river is almost always floatable, which is surprising for such a little thing. I put-in at Dodge's Sportsmans Park; a poor and muddy put-in. One load of rock would fix it, but what can you do?
The stream winds with slow purpose thru beautiful country to the Trempeleau National Wildlife Refuge. With wind from the north or west, you move along easily. Several deadfalls, but only one spanned the river and required a brief push over a submerged section. Two low bridges didn't require any ducking this day. Raptors and a curious herd of cattle were the main fauna sightings.
Take out at the first TNWF access which is not improved but easy enough. About three hours of minimal effort in my 16' tandem canoe turned solo (wife and friends having a bit too much fun the night prior). Cold water, cool air, and considerable sun made it a great trip for very early fall color. Don't forget the Trempeleau!
