Lake Hodges - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Submitted by: evanmarsch
Lake Hodges is easily one of my favorite kayaking destinations; if it were not for the beautiful views, I'd paddle there exclusively for the convenient launch point.
Open for boating Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, the reservoir is situated in a valley that is bordered to the west by the Del Dios highway. The reservoir has three forks: the dam to the south-west, the mangrove type marsh to the south-east, and the freeway to the north east. There are several 'no-wake' zones situated in convenient locations close to the shoreline, and they provide for a nice, calm paddling experience.
My most recent adventure took me to the eastern fork, where there is a hidden creek that feeds the lake. The creek is small; however, it seems like a mangrove swamp once you start traveling inward, and provides for some great photo opportunities.
If you do intend to travel to the south eastern creek, I would recommend staying on the southern shoreline for the duration, as the lake can be quite windswept due to it being situated in a valley.
Concessions store, as well as kayak and small boat rentals. They're open Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from half an hour before sunrise, to half an hour after sunset.
$2.00 launch fee for a single kayak
Exit I-15 at via rancho pkwy, head west until you see the signs.
