Fountainbleu State Park - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: August 6, 2011
Nearest City: Mandeville, LA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: scully77

Description:

Two friends and I left Denham Springs after my friend getting off work around 5 o'clock Saturday August 6 afternoon. We planned to take our kayaks out on the lake and campout that night and head out to the Okatoma River in the morning.

We had arrived a little later than I liked, but regardless we carried down to the lake and shoved off and paddled down the coast. We went towards the causeway watching the sun set as we paddled. It was about a mile (maybe less) when my friend and I were distracted by a frisbee floating in the water. We attempted to play ultimate kayak frisbee with two people, it was pretty interesting.

After the sun had set we decided to paddle back to the pier and go set up camp.

All around an awesome trip, even though it was fairly short. There are many bayous and streams that aren't far from the beach at the state park. This could potentially be a day long, or even a weekend long exploring trip. Definitely worth it.

Accommodations:

campsites, primitive or electric and water provided. also RV hookups. We camped primitive. There's a water park to cool off, a fishing lake. and a 400 foot pier onto the lake. and a very nice public beach for being in LA. Also there is an old sugar mill for a neat tourist attraction. Check it out if you can.

Fees:

To enter the park it is $1. To camp for 1 night it is $18, for any more it is $12 a night. Fees change depending on the season.

Directions:

From Baton Rouge on I-12 take the Mandeville abita springs exit and head south. when you get to Florida St., take a left. There will be signs guiding you. but once on Florida St., the park entrance is about 1.5-2 miles.
