Virginia Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 2011
Nearest City: Stoneham, ME
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: topshot

Description:

This is a true wilderness experience. There is only 1 home on the lake, the rest of the area is conservation land. Weekday you will be the only person out on the lake; weekends there might be up to 3 more people. Your only companions will be lots of fish and loons, and possibly a moose. Take bug spray and avoid dusk as that's when the bugs are worse.

This is a stunning little gem of a lake. Takes only about 60 - 90 min. for a full paddle around, but you will want to spend more time here. There is even a large sandy beach, but the road to the beach is extremely rutted and a high ground clearance vehicle (not necessarily 4wd) is necessary. But the area where the boat launch is, any vehicle can make it, although you will travel by dirt road to get there.

Water is extremely clean. Mountain views, heavily wooded area.

Accommodations:

None - this is a wilderness setting.

Fees:

fishing license

Directions:

Rte 5 to Stoneham, ME. Turn onto Birch Rd (next to Keywaydin Lake) and then left onto Virginia Lake Rd. until you come to the boat launch.
