White River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: August 25, 2011
Nearest City: Noblesville, IN
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: Rose

Description:

White River: from Forest Park (in Noblesville) to 116th St.

Flow was about 250cfs and river was low - gauge height less than 3 ft.
Put-in is easy and safe at Forest Park. Several shallow spots where river spreads out over rocky beds, but fairly easy to navigate, even with a dog jumping around in my kayak.

River twists and turns quite a bit. plenty of spots to stop along the way since the water was low. one narrow squeeze between log jambs.

Most of the trip was secluded: only encountered 3 fishermen and no other boats. beginning of trip overlaps white river canoe company's run and you will pass their take out point.

Beautiful scenery between 32 and 116th St bridges. saw several heron, some ducks and geese, and a surprising number of kingfishers.

Took about 4 hours at leisurely pace with stops for the dog to swim and play. Boat ramp under 116th St has parking too. Traffic between Noblesville and 116th St is heavy during rush hours, so try to avoid late afternoon trips.

Accommodations:

Forest Park across 19 has facilities, but next to river is just parking

Fees:

no fees

Directions:

right off 19 in Noblesville at Forest Park Road there is a place to park and put in and at 116th bridge there is a boat ramp and parking at the end of Wapihani Drive
