Saugus River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: September 3, 2011
Nearest City: Saugus, MA
Difficulty: Moderate

Description:

Beautiful afternoon on fairly calm water. At points it was like glass. Plenty of inlets as this is kind of a tidal salt marsh also. Sandpipers, heron, and a taller bird I can't say the species were all around with the occasional gull as well.

Strong paddlers can venture under Boston Street bridge, slack tide would be best for return, we found out that an incoming tide has a lot of resistance when bottled up under the crossing.

Accommodations:

Dock, in rough shape, but it is there.
Launch ramp-if you are on a trailer.
Parking for maybe 10 cars off street, street is limitless and there is an adjacent lot on the other side of the bait shop.

Fees:

$5.00 day pass for use of launch, leave this on your dash or suffer the wrath of enforcement.

Directions:

You can launch directly next to Toms Bait Shop on Ballard street. This is located about a hundred yards west of the Fox Hill Y.C.. Almost spitting distance from 107(marsh road). Pretty sure you just need to get a $5 pass from the bait shop to launch from Saugus owned launch. Google Toms Bait shop if you are unfamiliar with the area.
