Allegheny River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: August 2011
Nearest City: Port Allegany, PA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Guy_Buckeye

Description:

We put in at the Port Allegany drop on Mill St. The water was shallow, but navigable. About 100 yards in, we had to portage around a fallen tree that looked like it had been there for a while. After we got back in, the water was much deeper and much easier to paddle. From there until our break in Turtlepoint, the water rose and fell (or maybe it was the river bottom). We didn't have to portage any more, but there were a few points that we had to push off the river bottom with our hands.

From our rest spot in Turtlepoint, we ventured onward to Eldred. This section of the river was much easier to paddle and the water was moving faster. We had to portage over an island soon after Turtlepoint but that was the only time we had to get out.

Aside from the niceness of being out on the water, we saw many fish (some of which were close to 24-30 inches), a bald eagle and two deer. The water was fine, but I think I would like to try the same trip early in the year before the water gets too low.
