Judith River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Weekend Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 14-16, 2011
Nearest City: Lewiston, MT
Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult
Submitted by: drkayaker View Profile

Description:

I'm reporting this as a warning to future paddlers of the upper Judith River.

Account of the high water this Spring, the Judith's normal high is 750 cfs but reached to about 15,000 cfs and has changed the river bed quit a bit.

A Montana guide book lists the Judith River as a class 1 beginer run with a small rock garden just below the Danvers bridge. A half mile above the highway 81 bridge there is now a class 4 rapid and many cotton wood strainers all the way to Judith Landing on the Missouri River.

A group of us ran the river once at 3400 cfs and last at 1270 cfs. As the river recedes to it's normal level of about 250 cfs for this time of year there will be many new changes.
